A short history of the Chorus

The Chorus was formed in 1985 by Rosemary Cole and the choir took its name from the ancient Stanborough Hundred division of Devon in which Kingsbridge stands, and from which its 45 members are drawn. A mixed voice choir and their repertoire covers a very wide spectrum of music from ancient to modern sacred, to operetta and from a cappella ensembles to full choral works with orchestra.

During her twenty five years Rosemary guided and developed the choir which in its time won several prestigious awards and has raised many thousands of pounds for national and local charities in venues as varied as Exeter Cathedral, National Trust properties, Buckfast Abbey and many South Hams churches and village halls.

In March 2004 the Chorus joined with the North Devon Choral Society and the South Devon Choir to form a massed choir of 230 voices. The choirs performed Verdi’s Requiem in Torquay Town Hall and at Barnstaple Pannier Market with an orchestra of 70 musicians. Three years later, the same 3CDs – Three Choirs of Devon – performed Carmina Burana under Rosemary’s baton.

Rosemary Cole retired from the Chorus at the end of 2010 having contributed enormously to the musical culture of the area, and she has left a choir of high reputation in an excellent condition for the new Director of Music, Christopher Fletcher.
